The University of Calgary is seeking a Director for its archaeology field school for a five-year limited term appointment at the rank of instructor in the Department of Anthropology and Archaeology. We are looking for a scholar to establish and maintain an active archaeological field school and suite of related heritage programming designed to advance ii’ taa’poh’to’p, the University of Calgary’s Indigenous Strategy. The anticipated start date will July 1, 2019.
The successful candidate will hold a PhD in archaeology or in anthropology with a demonstrated record of field research in archaeology. Experience working in the Northwestern plains is preferred. We seek a candidate with a demonstrated record of community-engaged research with Indigenous communities. The candidate will be expected to take over and further develop an on-going archaeology program taking place in association with the Siksika Nation. This program currently consists of an archaeological field school near Blackfoot Crossing Historical Park, which the Field School Director will manage and teach, an Aboriginal Youth Engagement program designed to introduce Indigenous students from local high schools to archaeology, and a Public Archaeology Program intended to increase awareness of Blackfoot culture in partnership with Blackfoot Crossing Historical Park.
The candidate should have experience managing large archaeological field projects and preparing reports on those excavations. The successful candidate should also have a demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with diverse communities and audiences, particularly with First Nations people and communities. Technical skills in areas such as Geographic Information Systems (GIS), remote sensing, and basic surveying skills will be assets. The successful candidate will understand Indigenous ontologies, epistemologies, methodologies, pedagogies and knowledges and know how to implement these understandings to move the program in new and exciting directions.
The successful candidate will have demonstrated an excellent ability to develop partnerships with Indigenous communities. In particular, they will have demonstrated an excellent ability to work positively with Indigenous leadership and in commitment to Indigenous expectation of partnerships and informed inclusion.
Service to the department, faculty, University and community will be expected, including a demonstrated commitment to the indigenous strategy ii’taa’poh;’to’p and it’s foundational principles of shared ethical space with Indigenous peoples, transformation and renewal. Overall, the ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate evidence of excellence in both teaching and research through avenues such as teaching dossiers and evaluations, peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations, community engagement projects, and a track record (or a potential) of securing funding.
The Department of Anthropology and Archaeology is housed in the Faculty of Arts. It has a long history of research on the northwestern Plains, and of active collaboration with Indigenous communities. The Department of Anthropology and Archaeology, the Faculty of Arts, the University of Calgary, and Blackfoot Crossing Historical Park have collaborated for the past decade and now, as part of the University’s Indigenous Strategy, are renewing commitments for further development of this important heritage site.
