Tenure-Track Assistant Professor – Environmental Archaeologist
The George Mason University Department of Sociology and Anthropology invites applications for a Tenure-Track Assistant Professor in environmental archaeology (geographic area open), to begin August 2020 (teaching load is 2:2). George Mason University has a strong institutional commitment to the achievement of diversity and excellence among its faculty and staff, and strongly encourages candidates to apply who will enrich Mason’s academic and culturally inclusive environment.
The Anthropology Program seeks an environmental archaeologist with one or more of the following areas of interest: climate change, diet, resilience and adaptability, transformation and collapse, and cultural resilience including areas surrounding the integration of socioecological systems with the ritual and symbolic domains of past lifeways. Excellence in fieldwork and laboratory skills is required. We prefer candidates focused on hunter-gatherers or nomadic pastoralists, but outstanding candidates working across geographic and subsistence boundaries are encouraged to apply. The capacity to teach a large, upper-division undergraduate course on the prehistory and history of climate change and introductory archaeology is expected.
The successful applicant must have teaching experience and a Ph.D. in-hand at the time of application. All applicants are expected to demonstrate a productive research and publication trajectory as well as a record of extramural funding.
Please submit the following documents: 2-page statement of interest covering research interests and achievements; curriculum vitae; a 1-page statement addressing how the applicant’s training and/or experiences would contribute to a climate that values diversity; and list of three references. Applications should be submitted at jobs.gmu.edu (Recruitment Number FAC7763; Position Number: F5369z) by October 1, 2019. Please contact Daniel H. Temple with any questions: firstname.lastname@example.org.
