The Department of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver campus invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position in Indigenous archaeology. The successful candidate should have demonstrated knowledge and experience engaging and working with Indigenous communities. This position will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, commencing July 1, 2020. The successful candidate should have a Ph.D. in anthropology/archaeology or related discipline as well as a strong record of research and demonstrated potential for excellence. While a Ph.D. is preferred, applicants who will have successfully defended the Ph.D. dissertation by the position start date may be considered. We also encourage applications from candidates who have relevant experience outside of the academy.
We welcome applicants whose research interests include western North America and/or the Pacific Rim. We seek candidates with expertise in global issues relevant to archaeological explorations of Indigenous history as well as connections to local communities. We especially encourage applications from candidates who identify as Indigenous; we use this term broadly, following the U.N Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and UBC’s Indigenous Peoples: Language Guidelines. We are interested in candidates with expertise in environmental issues and relevant methods such as (but not limited to): quantitative methods, zooarchaeology, archaeobotany, lithic analysis, geoarchaeology and molecular archaeology.
The successful candidate will be expected to maintain an active program of research, service, graduate supervision, and undergraduate and graduate teaching. They will join a community of scholars at the University of British Columbia that has a long history of research partnerships with Indigenous communities. This position is subject to final budgetary approval. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
