Doris Stone Post-Doctoral Fellows in Latin American Studies
Tulane University
The Doris Stone Post-Doctoral Fellows are intended to foster the professional development of gifted scholars, to enrich the Middle American Research Institute’s vigorous research environment, and to foster intellectual exchange among the Institute's research community. We seek to support the development of early-career scholars from diverse backgrounds (including historically under-represented groups and international scholars) who show promise as innovative researchers in Mesoamerican and Central American archaeology, an area in which Doris Z. Stone made significant contributions. We particularly seek candidates whose research interests address any of the following topics: settlement patterns and household archaeology, gender studies, or indigenist and community-based archaeology. Engagement in the technologies and methodologies of landscape archaeology is also highly desirable. Furthermore, we seek candidates whose research interests will broadly complement the Middle American Research Institute’s efforts 1) researching the indigenous history, languages, and cultures of Mesoamerica and Central America, 2) stewarding its archaeological and ethnological collections, and 3) developing programs and events to educate the public on indigenous Mesoamerica and Central America. Finally, we encourage applications from candidates who have active field programs. Fellows are expected to participate in the full intellectual life of the Institute, offer an advanced interdisciplinary seminar on a subject of their choice during the spring of each fellowship year, present on their research once every two semesters of the appointment, as well as counsel undergraduate, Masters, and doctoral students as needed on non-committee related matters. The Stone Center for Latin American Studies invites applications for a one-year (renewable for a second year) post-doctoral fellowship for the 2021-2022 academic year. Fellows will be selected following two criteria: (1) intellectual merit and (2) the potential impact that their research, teaching, and experience would have on the strategic advancement of the Middle American Research Institute at Tulane. The ideal candidate’s research will complement areas of strength represented by current Tulane faculty associated with the Institute. Successful candidates should also have strong organizational and interpersonal abilities, excellent written and oral communication skills, a demonstrated capacity to work collaboratively, and experience in managing multiple projects. Fellowships are one-year, residential, full-time appointments with a salary of $48,450 plus benefits, renewable for a second year based on performance and funding availability. Travel and moving expenses are not supported. Applicants must also have received their Ph.D. no later than May, 2016 and are not currently holding a tenure-track position. Applicants who are currently ABD must complete their Ph.D. by May, 2021. Preference will be given to those who have not had recent access to Tulane University’s resources and whose research would benefit from such access. Applications must be submitted via Interfolio by visiting apply.interfolio.com/83366 and must include (1) a curriculum vitae; (2) a cover letter describing research interests, teaching and administrative experience, and your particular capacity to contribute to the Center’s interdisciplinary mission; (3) a graduate transcript; (4) two recommendation letters; (5) a writing sample; (6) a detailed proposal for at least one content course or seminar; and (7) teaching evaluations if available.
