The Phoenix Arts and Culture Department supports, champions, and promotes the City's arts, culture, and educational community to make Phoenix a great place to live, work, and visit. The S'edav Va'aki Museum and the City's Archaeology Office are a division of the Arts and Culture Department and are seeking a dynamic individual to serve as the next City Archaeologist.
This position is the archaeological technical expert for the City to ensure that the City remains in compliance with federal and state laws, regulations, policies, ordinances, and current industry standards regarding archaeological and cultural resources and to ensure best practices for the treatment (including interpretation) of City-owned archaeological sites. The City Archaeologist is responsible for developing successful partnerships with, and acts as the City's liaison to Tribal communities, state and federal agencies, stakeholder organizations, and the public.
The position provides management-level advice to department administration and outside entities on technical and regulatory archaeological policy issues and concerns. The City Archaeologist provides supervision and technical oversight of permanent employees and consultants hired under direct contract to the City or by private entities to conduct archaeological investigations. These investigations include preparing plans and reporting for archaeological inventory, monitoring and data recovery. The position is responsible for overseeing the development of archaeological treatment plans and regulatory compliance actions and routinely reviewing and evaluating the impacts of City and applicant activities on archaeological/cultural resources. The City Archaeologist is also charged with managing archaeological resources and investigations within the boundaries of the S'edav Va'aki Museum.
SALARY
Hiring Range: $97,780.80 - $107,806.40 annually.
