The Department of Anthropology in the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Arkansas invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Archaeology, North America to start in August 2025. This is a standard nine-month faculty appointment. This is one of two archaeology positions currently being advertised in the department; applicants wishing to be considered for both must submit materials for each position separately.
We seek candidates with an active research program positioned at the forefront of archaeological research in North America. The ideal candidate will complement and/or expand upon existing program strengths, but specific methodological and temporal areas of specialization are open. We are particularly interested in candidates whose work addresses current issues in public, applied, and/or community-engaged archaeology as well as in the academy. The successful candidate will also be able to provide undergraduate and graduate training in these areas. Candidates should also demonstrate through teaching, mentorship, research, and service a commitment to establishing scholarly excellence for all.
We especially invite applications from candidates who are committed to developing collaborative research programs with departmental colleagues, colleagues in cognate departments and area studies programs, and with other centers and units in the University of Arkansas system, such as the Arkansas Archeological Survey, the University of Arkansas Stable Isotope Lab, the Center for Advanced Spatial Technologies, and the Arkansas Humanities Center. Minimum Qualifications: •Ph.D. in anthropology or a closely related field from an accredited institution of higher education conferred by the start of appointment •An active research program in anthropological archaeology
Preferred Qualifications: •Demonstrated theoretical and methodological expertise that complements or expands on existing program foci •A strong record of national/international scholarship in North American archaeology, including extramural funding and peer-reviewed publications •A research and teaching philosophy that involves public, applied, and/or community-engaged archaeology such as partnerships with local, regional, descendant and/or stakeholder communities •Experience teaching undergraduate and/or graduate courses and ability develop new curricula to complement and expand the current course catalog •Ability to mentor undergraduate and graduate students in independent research •Demonstrated commitment to cultivating a scholarly environment for all through teaching, mentoring, research, outreach, and service

The Department of Anthropology examines similarities and differences among people, lifestyles, and world views through time by the study of artifacts and material remains, the evolution of humankind and other primates, and issues such as ethnicity, gender, class, social inequity and religion. Courses help students explore many approaches to the various subfields.
